Today marks the anniversary of my 31st year living with type 1 diabetes. I celebrated this past weekend by cheering at the CampWILD 2012 WILDday Race this past Sunday. It was incredible. I was inspired and amazed at the progress and empowerment of the campers. I was lifted up and inspired and motivated by the coaches. I’m ready for another 31 years!
My father, he has type 1 diabetes too. He was diagnosed when I was 1 year old. This morning, this was the wonderful email I received from him. He’s been managing his type1 for 46 years now, and this email touches my heart. Thanks Dad.
Dear Mari,
Although not necessarily a happy day, I believe this date marks the 31st anniversary of the diagnosis of your diabetes. One doesn’t celebrate such events, but it is worth remembering.
After 31 years you are clearly in charge of your disease. You have worked exceptionally hard managing your diabetes. You refuse to let it control you.
You can take satisfaction in everything you have done to understand how you can lead a normal life and how you have helped others with diabetes learn how to live successful lives. I am very proud of you. You’ve had big health factors thrown your way and you’ve beat them back with graceful even humorous and tenacious vitality.
Yes today marks a milestone in your life. I congratulate you on how well you’ve lived with diabetes and wish you continued success throughout your life.
Love, Dad
