FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I become a member of TeamWILD?

A: Becoming a member of TeamWILD is super easy. All you have to do is one of the following things: come to CampWILD, sign up for a Training Program in Cycling, Triathlon or Running, sign up for WILDfit: the walk/run starter program, join the TeamWILD Membership Site that includes a super cool insider forum with lots of great information about diabetes, exercise and being an athlete with diabetes.

Once you have done one of the things in the list above, you are forever a member of TeamWILD!

Q: Do I have to already be an athlete to join TeamWILD?

A: NO! This is one of the most common questions we get. We believe that being an athlete begins in your mind with the beliefs and thoughts you have. One of our mottos is: Our Beliefs influence our Thoughts. Our Thoughts influence our Actions.  Our Actions influence our Results.

Therefore, we are fully aware that some of you do not yet embrace, like, or think you even remotely could be, or are, an athlete. That’s okay. You can join us if what you want is health, wellness, fitness, happiness, good diabetes management and some cool friends who understand you.

AND, if you ARE already an athlete, we have lots of stuff for you! Our diabetes staff are all themselves athletes and they talk and plan right alongside the athletic coaching staff. How amazing is THAT!

Q: What do I need to join?

A: You need to want it. “It” being to achieve a wellness and fitness goal. Once you have that, if you are joining WILDfit, you need a pair of good shoes, a simple timer-style watch, a computer to watch the instructional videos and time to actually get out there and DO the walking and running!

If you are joining one of the training programs you need the appropriate gear for that sport. We can help you if you need guidance getting a bike, or any of the many things needed for triathlon.

If you are coming to CampWILD, we will help you with the gear!

Q: Does TeamWILD meet in person?

A: Yes. And No. We meet in person at CampWILD! And if you join a training program and then join a Race Weekend, then we will meet in person. Otherwise, we don’t meet in person to do workouts. This way you can literally live anywhere in the world and belong to TeamWILD!

We do encourage you to find other people of your athletic/fitness ability with whom to walk and exercise. We will help you think about which groups you might join and what resources are available in your geographic area.

Q: How old do I need to be to join TeamWILD?

A: TeamWILD is for people over the age of 18.

Q: How is TeamWILD connected to the Tour de Cure?

A: TeamWILD is the one and only officially endorsed Tour de Cure cycling training resource for riders with diabetes! TeamWILD wrote the Cyclists with Diabetes Training Guide that every rider in the Tour de Cure gets when they sign up to ride! TeamWILD loves the Tour de Cure!

Mari Ruddy, the founder of the Red Rider Program of the Tour de Cure, is also the founder and director of TeamWILD. She knows how challenging it can be to figure out how to ride successfully in the Tour if you also live with diabetes. The Tour de Cure is a big reason that Mari started TeamWILD!

Q: Do I have to know how to ride a bike to join TeamWILD?

A: No you don’t. Especially if you are doing WILDfit which is a walk/run starter program. If you are doing the Cycling Program or the Triathlon Program, you should have a bike and know how to ride it.

Q: What if I just want to lose weight?

A: Technically speaking, TeamWILD is not a weight-loss program. We are a movement program. That said, if you haven’t been moving very much and then you join TeamWILD, you very likely might lose some weight! Eventually we hope to offer an “Athletes Off Season Weightloss Program.”

Q: What is Teamy Goodness?

A: Teamy Goodness is what happens when people who like to exercise, be healthy and look at life through the lens of “let’s make life awesome” hang out together and support one another and encourage one another. It’s what happens when you join TeamWILD.

    Hi Christy!!!
It was awesome to meet you!!!! So, I think you should begin with WILDfit. Not that you need the athletic coaching with the walking and exercise classes you do, but the diabetes and nutrition coaching that goes along with WILDfit are awesome!!! Plus you get access to Jenny, diabetes coach, by being in WILDfit. And if you go to the Store tab on the site, you will see that WILDfit is only $105 write now!!!! Then, if you like that, you could do a cycling or running program!!!!

    Christy —
The WILDfit run/walk program may be a good fit for you. While building on the walking that you already do, WILDfit will also give you tons of information that should help you control your blood sugar during and after exercise. Our diabetes and nutrition staff share with you what’s happening in your body when you’re moving, and how best to fuel that movement!

Hi Mari – we met yesterday at the Children’s Diabetes Guild Meeting. I have explored your website and I’m not sure where I would fit….I currently walk my dog daily (about 1-2 miles) and workout 2 to 3 times a week in an exercise class. My needs aren’t so much about the workout, but managing my blood sugars during and after. What would you suggest?
