From The Desk Of: Mari Ruddy, Team WILD Director
Date: Thursday, May 17, 2012
Dear Aspiring or Experienced Cyclist,
Do you want to better understand how to exercise with diabetes? Specifically, have you ever struggled with how to manage diabetes while riding your bike? Have you ever wished someone could watch you ride and give you instant feedback that would help you immediately improve your comfort, efficiency and performance on the bike? Have you ever been afraid to go out on a long ride because you weren’t sure how to manage your blood sugars with your nutrition needs? In fact, do you ever wonder, what are your nutritional needs on the bike? Have you ever wished you had a cycling coach? And have you ever wished the cycling coach talked to your diabetes educator and to you at the same time?
Believe me, I can relate. I wanted all of that for so long. I’ve had diabetes for 30 years and I have felt very alone about my diabetes and my cycling. I was so alone and confused. My a1c was really bad, over 12, in fact. Over the years on my bike, I made so many mistakes I’m almost embarrassed to admit it to you. For such a long time I didn’t think I was a good enough cyclist to get help, so I just kept struggling alone for a long time. I don’t want that for you.
Fortunately for me (and now you), I found a way to solve these problems. I started a lifelong journey to find the right people, the right diabetes experts, the right cycling coaches. I wanted people who would work together to help me understand the complexities of diabetes and exercise. And my first sport of choice was cycling. I wanted experts who would listen to me and help me understand how to eat, how to manage my medications, who would help me become a stronger more efficient cyclist, and who would not make fun of me or make me feel stupid when I made a mistake or didn’t understand.
And I am very happy to bring these experts together all in one place to help you. That place is Camp WILD Cycling Training Camp. Camp will be held in Boulder, Colorado from June 20 - 24, 2012.
“How CampWILD Cycling Training Camp Helps You … “
Here’s a quick recap of how CampWILD Cycling Training Camp works, what you get and the REAL VALUE is of CampWILD Cycling Training Camp!
- Learn from our amazing camp cycling coach
TeamWILD coaches are skilled and experienced, and teach bike handling and endurance in a fun and approachable way. They bring humor, patience, knowledge, fun, empowerment and laughter to your experience on the bike.
- Improve your cycling skills
During Camp you will do cycling drills to improve your handling and efficiency on the bike. You will learn about hill climbing as if there is no hill (yes, this is possible!). And you will learn about riding in groups with ease and comfort. Check out this video of athletes doing a drill at campWILD!
- Manage your diabetes as you ride
At Camp, you will learn all about diabetes in highly engaging, interactive workshops that are interwoven with time out on the bike. Diabetes education is fun and concepts are immediately applied.
Just a few of the topics that we will cover at CampWILD: basal/bolus for endurance cycling, managing hypoglycemia, managing hypergycemia, what to do when going on really long rides, type 2 medications for cycling and so much more!
- Nutrition and Hydration
Learning about nutrition and hydration is something nearly every athlete wonders about, whether or not they have the extra challenge of diabetes. Add in diabetes and it’s super easy to be confused and overwhelmed. At CampWILD we will virtually eliminate your confusion! Our incredible team of dietitians will unravel the knot of how, what, when, and why to eat and drink for performance.
You will learn about what your needs are on the bike, how to make medication adjustments to handle the nutrition needs that you have and what your body is doing when you are riding long. We will address how to make a Race Day plan and how to implement that strategy.
- Learn from Diabetes Experts
I mentioned earlier that I went out to find the best for me and for you. The key to all of this is an incredible coach and incredible diabetes educators. The team TeamWILD has assembled is unmatched. You can read about them all on their bios on the TeamWILD website. Here are a few quick highlights about each of these amazing teachers.
Marcey Robinson – Marcey has tons of energy, passion, and she is super knowledgeable. She is an incredible listener, she is a wealth of resources, she explains things well and super clearly, she is approachable, and she is herself an athlete. She is first a cyclist, and in fact did some competitive mountain biking back in the day. After time with Marcey, you will love carbs and understand why. In addition, Marcey is a mom of a toddler, and thus she understands how to balance life: children, health, a job and staying fit. She’s one of the best presenters around and you will thoroughly enjoy learning from Marcey. She has experience teaching a wide variety of people from those of us with diabetes, to medical professionals to the friends and family of those of us who live with diabetes. Marcey is a gem, you WANT to know and learn from this amazing woman!!
Jenny Smith – Jenny is super smart too (I only hire super smart people, so you know!) Thus she knows about type 2 and type1 diabetes. Jenny is calm yet very passionate about helping people with diabetes get the information and skills they need to be empowered athletes. Jenny is herself living successfully with type 1 diabetes. She is an athlete, and in fact was on the first TeamWILD team and is a 70.3 finisher, and a marathoner. She understands special needs diets and is herself a plant-based vegan and is a gifted cook. One of Jenny’s loves is diabetes data analysis.
Lyndsay Riffe – Lyndsay is of course, super smart, and she is a gifted presenter. She loves diabetes and exercise and she loves helping people learn the latest strategies for management. Lyndsay listens carefully and really focuses on helping each athlete get the very specific assistance, guidance and knowledge that will help get you to the next level of diabetes management. Lyndsay has lived with type 1 diabetes since she was 4 years old and she has been an athlete on TeamWILD since the start. She became an Ironman finisher at the Wisconsin Ironman in September 2011.
Meet one of your diabetes team. This is Jenny Smith!
- Mental Skills Give You Confidence & Boost Your Performance
Lots of other organizations skip the Mental Skills component of performance. Not here at TeamWILD and for sure not at CampWILD Cycling Training Camp. I was terrified of low blood sugars, so much so that it stopped me from going out on long bike rides. Even after I intellectually understood how to make adjustments, it wasn’t until I worked with a Mental Skills coach that I really got to the bottom of my anxiety about performance and diabetes, and gain the needed confidence to trust my knowledge.
Ginger Vieira is incredible. She is the CampWILD and TeamWILD Mental Skills Coach and she will be at the entire camp. She will talk with you and she will lead workshops about goal setting and understanding the role of the mind in performance. She will help you unravel your issues about athletic performance and how diabetes influences you.
- Peer Support is Teamy Goodness
“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go with others.”
Diabetes is a team sport. We all need a great team to manage this condition. On your team you need your peers. I think of diabetes as a string of 100 mile bike rides. It’s a long event. Toward that end, we need to have people around us who lift us up, who inspire us, who understand what it’s like day in and day out. Come to CampWILD and meet amazing people just like you who care deeply about their health and well being. Meet other people. I call this TEAMY GOODNESS!!! At CampWILD you will make lifelong, transformative friendships.

When I was on here the other might, there was information on a camp in San Diego in pril, 2012. Is that one still being offered?
JJ….You should totally go! This is right up your ally. Hope all is well with you:)
(and…I would pay good money to see you cross dress!)
Jason –
.
Yes, TeamWILD is now entirely co-ed, and that includes the cycling camp! You’re welcome to cross-dress if you feel the need, though — some of those cycling skirts are kind of cute
Is this for men also? I hope so, if not I may begin cross dressing to attend, and yes that is a threat
Thanks for the reply.
